Between The Earth And The Sky, The Possibility Of Everything

Curatorial Statement

Between the earth and the sky, the possibility of everything will create a framework for artistic experimentation presented in a dynamic, engaging, surprising and fun way. Altering our basic assumptions about what we see, feel, and understand about our worlds and ourselves, the exhibition will invite audiences to re-think the social and sensorial possibilities of public spaces. The emphasis will be on artistic productions that make us reconsider the meanings of play and participation. The works will be unconventional and symbolic of their particular aesthetic. Projects will reflect poetically on the social and political issues affecting our present realities and possible futures.

Yvette Mattern, Global Rainbow

Global Rainbow, a monumental light installation that beams seven rays of laser light representing the color spectrum of a natural rainbow, illuminates the skyline of Toronto. Visible from all the exhibition areas, the installation is place in direct relation with the CN Tower. Encompassing geographical and social diversity in its reach, it aims to symbolize hope.

Maria Ezcurra, Made in China

Made in China is made up of garments donated by the Chinese community of Toronto. It functions as a façade that connects two cultures, old customs and current trends, globalization and tradition, society and individuals.

Alexandre Arrechea, BLACK SUN

Black Sun is a video animation of a wrecking ball arcing through space and bouncing off an invisible surface. It links the instability of the animated image of a wrecking ball in the moment of destruction with the apparent solidity of its setting.

Dineo Seshee Bopape, The problem of beauty

an ultra cosmic

journey through the sublime...a kaleidoscopic, cosmic space,

face, body, space and sound are torn apart, fractured, in an ecstatic and orgasmic 'party' of light, colour and sound…

The video takes the form of “a discordant ecstatic thrilling jagged beauty narrative.... Cosmic

Chloé Lefebvre, Jean Dubois, By Means of a Sigh (À portée de souffle)

Evoking the precarious of relations between our intimate bubble and the public sphere, this interactive video installation prompts the viewer to phone a number shown on the screen and blow into their mobile phone to control the breath of two characters.

Chélanie Beaudin-Quintin, Screaming Booth

The Screaming Booth is a solution to the lack of places in the city where we can freely express our emotions. It offers instead a place of release, where screams no longer have to be suppressed.

Marcos Zetos, AMAZE

AMAZE transforms an ordinary scaffolding structure into an immersive environment of light and sound in the heart of the city. A labyrinth like no other, it provides a multisensory experience through a personal journey of discovery and transformation.

David Brooks, Gap Ecology (Still Lives with Cherry Pickers and Palms)

David Brooks is inspired by a phenomenon of the Amazonian forest, the consequences of canopy gap formation. His work Gap Ecology (Still Lives with Cherry Pickers and Palms) translates into our urban jungle the results of newly formed gap: colonized by species fruiting and flowering, attracting bands of animal life to their bursts of growth - a veritable bacchanalia.

Urban Visuals: Nathan Whitford, Shy Lights

Six beams of light move to avoid illuminating participants in this interactive installation, a playful dance of pursuit and avoidance. Shy Lights explores distinctions between spotlight and searchlight by reversing the roles of light and subject.

Glenda León, Silent Rise

With this sculpture, the artist explores the notion of silence in relation to spiritual development. Silent Rise invites the audience to experience the act of listening from a new point of view: seeing sound, listening to images.

Pascal Grandmaison, La main du rêve

La Main Rêve is a video installation of reversed and slowed footage of un-natural destruction in a natural environment. It plunges the spectator into the heart of a suspended natural world that transcends reality.
